LONGBRIDGE PROVIDES A CLEANER BLACK CAB FOR BIRMINGHAM

Powertrain Ltd, part of Phoenix Venture Holdings and supplier of engines and gearboxes to MG Rover Group, today announced a pilot programme to encourage Birmingham’s taxi drivers to clean up their act by reducing their vehicles emissions.

In cooperation with Birmingham City Council and as part of the Don’t Choke Britain Events’ the company handed over the keys of the first cab to Ruth Watts, Secretary of the Birmingham Taxi Cooperative, and one of Birmingham’s female cab drivers.

The cab is the first officially licensed cab in Birmingham to run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas fuel. The award wining K Series engine with LPG conversion is 50% quieter than current taxi diesel engines and reduces CO2 by 29%, NOx levels by 95% and particulate emissions by 92% compared to the current diesel taxis in Birmingham. Conversions will be supported by the Energy Savings Trust, a government agency established to approve and provide grants for such conversions. LPG taxis provide benefits to pedestrians, taxi passengers and taxi operators and the environment in general.

Gordon Poynter, Commercial Director of Powertrain Ltd said: "We are delighted to support this important initiative by Birmingham City Council and look forward to the prospect of many more taxi conversions with the K Series engine in LPG form in the coming months. In due course we hope to see the initiative spread to London and other cities where the famous British black cab is well established."

Ruth Watts, who shares her taxi, which is on the road up to 16 hours a day, with her husband, said: "In trials over the last month I have seen incredible savings in total running costs and at the same time I have been able to reduce the emission and noise levels – so everyone is a winner."

Councillor Bryan Nott, Chair of City Councils Licensing Committee commented: "There are approximately 1,100 Hackney carriage vehicles licensed in Birmingham and we would like to encourage as many as possible to convert to alternative fuels as it would have a positive impact on reducing air pollution as well as being cheaper to operate the vehicle."

Powertrain Ltd will be shortly inviting all drivers of black cabs in Birmingham to a presentation on the economic and environmental benefits of the K Series LPG conversion.

WINNING MG ON SHOW AT CANARY WHARF

The race-winning MG ZS Hot Wheel Racing Touring car leads a display of exciting MG cars at this year’s Motor Expo show in Canary Wharf.  MG is displaying its new product range – the TF sports car, the ZR, ZS and the ZT - which has quadrupled in size since this time last year.

Top-of-the-range models of each range are on display:

  • MG ZR 160

  • MG XPOWER ZS Touring car

  • MG ZT-T (the estate version of the ZT saloon)

  • MG TF 160

The MG stand is sited near the Tower on the North-side of the Canary Wharf Motor Expo, which is a free show, open between Monday 10 June and Saturday 15 June, between 9am-6pm.

Note: MG Rover Group have also confirmed their attendance at the Birmingham motor show in October

MG ZR – THE AFFORDABLE SPORTS CAR ENTRANT

The new range of performance ‘supermini’ cars, with a dedicated sports personality in the form of the MG ZR, has affordable prices to match the performance of the product, and in so doing assuring buyers that the new MG product range provides best ‘performance-for-money’.

The purposeful appearance of the new MG ZR is complemented by a new front design, dominated by a bold new grille, its surround painted to match the body colour incorporating bright finish mesh finished with the MG octagon badge.

The ZR is a particularly attractive ‘hot hatch’, built in 3- and 5-door body styles and available in a variety of engines and trim levels, to cater for market needs.  Involving performance is guaranteed - whether the ZR is powered by the 1.4-litre K Series, L Series turbo diesel, 1.8-litre K Series in manual or Stepspeed transmission.  The top-performing model is the ZR 160 with the verve of the 160Ps 1.8-litre K Series with Variable Valve Control.

All MG ZRs feature body coloured exterior items; side rubbing strips, door handles and mirrors, bumper inserts, tailgate lift, aerodynamic tailgate spoilers, front and rear bib spoilers.  Black headlamp bezels and bright mesh main and lower grilles complete the distinctive appearance.

ZR is tuned with a sporting chassis set-up for agile and responsive cornering dynamics.  Rapid steering response, throttle adjustability and direct steering feedback are all key to the driver enjoyment of this ‘pocket-rocket’.  The ZR also features low ride-height, sports rated front and rear springs and next-generation’ Delphi high technology dampers give a composed ride and handling balance.

Rob Oldaker, MG Rover’s Product Development Director, said: “The ZR gives customers exhilaration and performance whatever their budget - something MG has always stood for.”

CHASSIS ENTERTAINMENT WITH MG ZS SPORTS SALOON

MG’s new ZS sports saloon has a distinct dynamic character, race-track looks, a powerful engine and is the basis of the Company’s entry into Touring Car racing.  With a powerful and smooth six-cylinder engine, rare in a car of this size and unique at the price, the range-topping MG ZS 180 is expected to excite sports-minded drivers.

Wind-tunnel work on the car’s aerodynamics, have produced a package for the ZS 120 of front bib and rear spoilers and side skirts to minimise aero drag and lift.  The bumper increases airflow to the engine, increasing stability at speed and highlights the car’s muscular stance when viewed from the front.

The interior has special colour co-ordinated sports seats, Rhodium silver fascia detailing and silver instrumentation.  The MG sports steering wheel and gearshift use an alloy and leather combination design.  ZS 180 versions are specified in black perforated leather, with matching gearshift and handbrake gaiter.

MG ZS flatters the smooth, skilful driver, yet it also rewards the more adventurous driver who may enjoy exploiting its performance. The vehicle retains excellent directional stability.  The chassis specification of ZS was actually developed on the racetrack by enthusiasts before the MG saloon programme started.

Rob Oldaker, Product Development Director, MG Rover Group said: “MG cars have always been appreciated by enthusiastic drivers and we have been delighted with the response from the media and public to the MG ZS, particularly the ZS 180 with its powerful and smooth six-cylinder engine, rare in a car of this size.”

DYNAMIC ZT SALOON HEADS MG RANGE

Heading up the new MG saloon range, the ZT models bring a new sporting aura to the upper-medium and compact executive car sectors.  Three power outputs are available - 160, 180 and 190Ps - from the quad-cam 2.5-litre KV6 engine.

True to MGs sports pedigree, the MG ZT makes a strong visual impact with a purposeful stance and style.  Aerodynamic features and various chassis dynamic elements have been developed to influence handling qualities to produce a real sports-driving characteristic.

A body coloured aerodynamic rear spoiler is available on the MG ZT models, which has been harmonised with the front bumper design to substantially reduce aerodynamic lift, benefiting straight-line stability, controlling high-speed lane change characteristics and increasing high-speed braking efficiency.

The interior focuses on a 'technical’ look with fascia panels and console finished in Rhodium silver, with matching silver finished instrument dials.  The traditional MG octagon badge features at the centre of the black leather trimmed steering wheel, perforated on the grip sections.  A similar approach co-ordinates the spherical alloy/leather gearshift and handbrake.

Rob Oldaker, Product Development Director, MG Rover Group said: “MG has always been about unleashing the potential for excitement and these new British products express themselves with verve, in the hands of the owners that drive them.  We have produced some exhilarating MG cars and they thrill all who are lucky enough to drive them.”

NEW GENERATION MG TF SPORTS CAR

The MG TF - successor to Britain's best selling MGF sports car – is currently being launched throughout Europe.  Styled by MG Rover Group's renowned designer Peter Stevens, the TF has evolved from the popular MGF and features a new exterior appearance, an all-new suspension design, higher performance engines and a host of new paint, trim and hood colours.

Key changes include:

  • Body shape - front, side and rear styling and aerodynamic improvements

  • Headlamps incorporate projector and direction indicator lamps

  • Entirely new suspension for enhanced driver involvement and response:

  • Coil springs replace the interconnected Hydragas system

  •  Solidly-mounted subframes for improved handling responsiveness

The aggressive and purposeful style of the MG TF is sleeker and sportier, with a lower stance made possible by the inclusion of new:

  • Front bumper formed for aerodynamic performance with MG grille identity

  • Rear bumper housing larger exhaust pipes

  • Headlamp units incorporating projector lamps and direction indicators

  • Body monoside with new shape mid-engine air-intakes

Four models now give customers a progressive range of performance, power and specification. Designated by numbers close to their power output the four-model range comprises the 1.6-litre TF115, the 1.8-litre TF135, the TF120 Stepspeed sports auto and the range-topping TF160.

The new TF incorporates a number of substantial changes, which include a new suspension design. A completely new suspension utilises coil springs, to produce a responsive and involving set-up.  The entire suspension and ABS brake systems have been enhanced and result in a completely enjoyable driving experience.

MG ROVER IN TALKS OVER CONTINUED OPERATION OF
DAEWOO-FSO PLANT IN WARSAW, POLAND

MG Rover and the Government of Poland are involved in discussions relating to the potential continuing operations of the Daewoo FSO plant in Warsaw and Daewoo FSO's distribution operations in Poland.

The scope of the discussions includes the continued production of models currently manufactured at the Zeran plant in Warsaw, and the 'local' manufacturing of MG Rover vehicles and engines.  This would give MG Rover representation in the region, in order to develop its presence.

The plant currently produces the Daewoo Matiz, Nubira and Lanos vehicles, plus the Fiat-based Polonez.  Discussions are being conducted exclusively.  Several meetings have taken place but as yet no formal decisions have been taken.  Further announcements will be made in due course, until then no further information will be available.

MG GETS THE MIDAS TOUCH

As the only truly all-British team at this weekend's British Touring Car Championships at Silverstone, MG XPOWER Hot Wheels Racing and WSR have chosen to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee by adding the Midas touch to the MG ZS Touring car.

The screen headers on the cars of Anthony Reid and Warren Hughes, usually seen in vibrant green and XPOWER grey, will be replaced with jubilee gold and black for this special occasion.

In addition, the 1.5 Millionth MG - a Golden Jubilee commemorative MG TF 160 - will be displayed on bank holiday Monday by the MG stand at the Silverstone circuit. Finished in new Monogram 'Jubilee' Gold paintwork, it features Golden Jubilee emblems embroidered into the headrests and embossed into the wheel centres. It also carries the MG02 OTF registration.

The MG TF is taking part in the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Cavalcade in London on Tuesday 4 June. The cavalcade departs from Horse Guards Parade, past Buckingham Palace and along The Mall from mid-afternoon. See Silverstone May31/Jun2

ASTON VILLA ANNOUNCE MGR AS OFFICIAL SPONSOR

Steve Stride, Mark Ansell from Villa and Terry Hunt of MGR, with the one-ff R25!

Two of the Midlands most prestigious corporate names, Aston Villa and MG Rover Group, have today announced a shirt sponsorship deal encompassing the next two seasons.

The Midlands' biggest British car manufacturer obtained "Premiership" status by linking up with the region's premier football club to ensure an extension to an ongoing commercial partnership to almost twenty years.

MG Rover Group, UK Retail Sales Director, Terry Hunt commented: "This is a marriage between the Midlands' premier car manufacturer and premier football club - and is testament to how far MG Rover Group has progressed over the last two years. Official club sponsor is a significant investment for the company and reflects the fact that we are seen as one of the major players in the automotive industry. This deal enables us to market the brand at national and international level. On a local level the success of both Aston Villa and ourselves has and will continue to be of great importance to the region and further afield."

Aston Villa Chairman Doug Ellis was in Japan with the England Football team and therefore unavailable for today's announcement, added: "The synergy between ourselves and MG Rover Group is very apparent, both in terms of success and of importance to the region. Our relationship with them has progressed over the last two years - it seems only fitting that it has reached official club sponsor status."

The home and away kit will feature the Rover and MG brands respectively rather than having MG Rover Group on both. The home kit is available for order as of today and goes on sale in the club shop on 15 July. MG Rover Sales & Marketing Director, John Sanders added: "By separating the two brands between home and away kits we are maintaining the individuality of both brands. Of course this sponsorship will help contribute to the world-wide awareness and desirability of our two brands."

To celebrate the deal, MG Rover has produced a special one-off vehicle, an 'Aston Villa Rover 25'.

The car, which will include the club colours, crest and special features, will be given away as the prize in a special competition to be announced later in the summer.

MG TO THE RESCUE

MG has been chosen to support the Spa motor racing circuit in Belgium with the provision of its latest MG models. The circuit, one of the longest and fastest on the Formula 1 calendar, has selected four MG ZS’ as rescue vehicles, which will be sited around the circuit on race days and a MG ZT-T as its track safety car.

The MG ZS 120 and ZT-T 190 models all feature sports suspension, race-bred aerodynamics and powerful engines. The ZS is also the basis for the company’s entry in the British Touring Car Championship. All vehicles have been fitted with specialist fire and safety features including public address equipment, flashing lights, siren and also carry medical first aid, extinguishers, flags and essential tools.

Xavier Farcy, managing director of MG Rover Belux said: "With Spa circuit’s status changing to a permanent racetrack, having previously used parts of the public roads, the Spa management sought an automotive partner and we’re obviously delighted to have been chosen. The association with this premier motor racing circuit, at a time when the MG range is expanding and itself taking a competitive role in world motorsport, is great news."

ROVER ANNOUNCES SPONSORSHIP OF THE XVII COMMONWEALTH GAMES

City of Manchester stadium, 9th May 2002: Olympic triple jump gold medallist and current World Champion Jonathan Edwards today joined Rover to announce their involvement as Official Car Sponsor for the XVII Commonwealth Games, to be held in Manchester from 25 July to 4 August 2002. Jonathan was accompanied at the announcement by his fellow Commonwealth Games athletes: cyclist and Olympic gold medallist Jason Queally, sprinter and Olympic silver medallist Darren Campbell and Britain’s number one long jumper Jade Johnson.

Rover will provide a fleet of over 800 chauffeur-driven cars to the Commonwealth Games – a record number of cars ever provided to a UK sporting event of this kind. The fleet, made up of Rover 45 and 75 models, will be readily available to transport athletes, coaches, VIPs and officials around Manchester to and from the various Commonwealth Games venues.

The Commonwealth Games is the UK’s largest multi-sport event. The event will involve over 5,000 athletes and officials, from 72 countries competing across 17 sports. An estimated one million people will attend the games and a further one billion will watch them on TV.

During the course of the competition, the fleet of Rover cars will travel approximately 1,500,000 miles and will be driven by at least 1,600 Commonwealth Games volunteer drivers.

Steve Robertson, UK Marketing Director of MG Rover Group, commented: "Manchester 2002 is set to be the biggest and best Commonwealth Games ever and we are honoured to be part of such a prestigious British event. This partnership with the Commonwealth Games is a natural fit for Rover, continuing our ongoing investment in the world of British athletics, for example with our sponsorship of Team GB at the Olympics."

Frances Done, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Games, added: "It is marvellous to have Rover on board as Official Car Sponsor for the Commonwealth Games. It is fantastic to be connected to such a prestigious British brand. By providing the fleet of cars, Rover is making a significant contribution to the success of the Games."

Rover is a major investor in British athletics. It is a sponsor of Team GB at the Olympics through an ongoing partnership with the British Olympic Association, which began with the Sydney Olympics and extends through to Athens 2004. Rover has also recently created the Rover Combined Events Initiative, a four-year grass-roots scheme in partnership with UK Athletics to help young athletes get involved with combined events – to find the stars of the future. The scheme will create 15 centres around the UK, providing children of primary school age upward with better facilities and standards of coaching in combined events. It will also support the National Combined Events Squad training sessions, investing in those athletes already at the pinnacle of their career, including Dean Macey and Denise Lewis.

Rover has created two cars to celebrate the Commonwealth Games – the Rover 25 and Rover 45 Spirit Special Editions.

MG ROVER GROUP TO SUPPORT THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW

MG Rover Group has today confirmed a decision to display ranges of MG and Rover cars at the British International Motor Show. The bi-annual event held at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham is the UK’s most prestigious motoring shop window and this year will run from 23 October to 3 November.

The decision to have an active presence at Birmingham is based on the company’s strategy to only participate in the major European shows where orders for new cars can be taken or the traffic and subsequent level of customer enquiries is of a sufficiently high volume and quality.

During its relatively short history, MG Rover Group has significantly expanded its product offering, moving into new market segments. The British International Motor Show provides the opportunity to demonstrate the latest MG and Rover ranges to a huge volume of private and business customers.

Commenting on the decision, John Sanders, sales and marketing director for MG Rover Group said: "The Company is pleased to announce that it will be displaying the MG and Rover ranges at the British International Motor Show where we can expect in excess of 500,000 visitors to our stand. We have recently achieved spectacular success at other European shows by having a new car on display and Birmingham will be no exception to this strategy."

MG ROVER & POWERTRAIN STAFF GET WORLD CUP BIRTHDAY SURPRISE

Employees at MG Rover and Powertrain will celebrate the company’s second anniversary with the news that they will have time off to watch England’s progress in the 2002 World Cup.

The company will use its flexible working time system to enable production staff to watch England versus Nigeria on Wednesday 12 June, employees not subject to working time arrangements to take a day’s holiday from their entitlement. The match between England and Argentina is played during the plant’s late spring shutdown week. Office-based staff will be able to use their holiday entitlement.

Should England’s football success mirror that of Britain’s biggest independent carmaker, staff will enjoy an added bonus. Progress past the group stage, to the knock-out phases, will see staff rewarded with an additional day’s holiday on the day of each match if they fall on a weekday.

Kevin Howe, Chief Executive, MG Rover suggested the idea. He said: "The England team will carry the hopes of many MG Rover and Powertrain workers, so it feels right to give people the time off to see the games. We wish the England team every success in Japan."

MG Rover was created, following the purchase of the Rover Group from BMW on 9 May, 2000.

In two years the company has made considerable progress. It is now a fully integrated automotive business, based entirely at Longbridge. It has a turnover in the region of £2 billion and employs 6500 people. The company has successfully launched the MG range of cars, and introduced the Rover 75 Tourer and the new MGTF.

The business has improved its performance in successive years, drastically reducing the losses faced by the Rover Group. In March 2002, MG Rover entered into a long-term strategic alliance with China Brilliance Industrial Holdings, which will see the joint development of world-class automobiles for the mutual benefit of both partners.

Mr Winton said: "I am delighted to be joining Powertrain at such an exciting time in its development as a strategic business unit within the Group."

1.5 MILLIONTH MG IS A GOLDEN JUBILEE SPECIAL

MG Rover announces today (16 April), the building of the 1.5 millionth MG car since production began in 1924. Over its 78-year history many characteristic varieties and designs of MG have made their mark on the enthusiastic motoring public and made this one of the most famous motoring brands. The 1.5 millionth MG produced today is the new TF 160. In celebration of H.M. Queen’s Golden Jubilee, it is fittingly painted in new Monogram Supertallic paint ‘Jubilee’ Gold and finished with special Jubilee badging.

MG has long been the by-word for sports car motoring and over its history, as illustrated in the attached listing, the proportion of roadster and sports saloon models produced runs at exactly 2:1, with the MGB itself accounting for one third in its own right.

In 1977 a similar project produced a specially prepared MGB GT finished in blue paintwork with Silver Jubilee livery, to celebrate the Silver Jubilee. This car was sold, with proceeds raising money for charity.

John Sanders, MG Rover’s group marketing director, said: "The MG marque is one of the most popular and enduring motoring marques, with a strong and enthusiastic following. The exclusivity of the MG experience is demonstrated by the 1.5 million MGs produced. This is no mainstream volume brand, but an authentic car capable of generating a rewarding driving experience for owners who demand more than just mere A-B transportation. The latest MG four model range delivers this exciting experience in a bold and dynamic way and is as authentic in its rewarding driving attitude as those that have been produced over the years."

1.5 MILLIONTH MG GOLDEN JUBILEE SPECIAL

It is significant that the 1.5 millionth MG should be the new TF, for it is the latest of a new range of MG sports cars and it currently holds the torch as the icon of the MG brand into the 21st Century.

The 1.5 millionth MG Golden Jubilee is painted in a new paint treatment under the Monogram programme. Monogram is a range of 20 exclusive paint colours, one of which is ‘Monogram Jubilee’, a light, bright special Supertallic Gold that is available for an £800 additional charge.

Specified around the top of the range TF 160, this celebration model has been fitted with optional fog lamps and passenger air bag. The seats are uniquely fitted with Oxford leather seat bolsters and central black Alcantara cushions and seat backs, which are embroidered with the Golden Jubilee crown logo.

On the exterior, exclusive badging includes official Golden Jubilee crown logos – on the four 16" alloy wheels and also incorporated into the ‘160’ ingot badge on the rear, next to the TF identity badging. Above the mid-engine side-intakes are the words ‘THE 1.5 MILLIONTH MG’. Finally, the MG is registered MG02OTF, so that there is no mistaking its special production significance.

The Golden Jubilee TF will be participating in a motoring cavalcade that finishes in the Mall on 4 June and in between, will be used to raise money, with the proceeds going to one of H.M. Queen’s nominated Golden Jubilee charities.

Every effort has been made to ensure the validity in the calculation of historic MG production. The most authentic and accurate records available have been used. Many MG models were produced in a multitude of body designs; 4- or 2-seater, saloons, open tourers, salonettes, sports, etc, so the saloon / roadster split is only an illustration of the popularity of body design rather than a specific record of individual body shapes, as records do not permit us to separate them specifically.

MG ROVER GROUP ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH CATERHAM CARS

MG Rover Group today confirms that it has signed a business and marketing partnership with Caterham Cars, the specialist British sportscar manufacturer.

The agreement includes an exclusive contract for Powertrain Ltd, its engine and gearbox subsidiary, to supply all power unit requirements for Caterham Cars. Additionally, Caterham will also be able to access MG Rover's powertrain technology and benefits related to the investment in K-series engines.

Commenting on the award of this contract, Gordon Poynter, commercial director, Powertrain Ltd, said: "Caterham has been using K-series for over 10 years in extreme performance conditions. We are delighted that as a result of proven reliability, technology and cost, they have decided to appoint us as their exclusive supplier."

However, this ground-breaking partnership is much greater than the supply of powertrain and technology. The arrangement also allows Caterham to use MG Rover's XPOWER branding on its racing and high performance road cars. Speaking at a joint press conference, John Sanders, group marketing director, MG Rover Group said: "Our contract as the exclusive powertrain supplier to Caterham opens up the potential for a much deeper relationship. Fundamentally, we are both in the racing business and our products share the same engines. We can therefore both exploit the strength of the XPOWER brand to our mutual benefit. This is going to be a true partnership and we will work hard on initiatives that benefit us both."

This is what - Pistonheads say about it:

New partnership announced by MG X Power and Caterham

In Longbridge today, MG X Power and Caterham Cars announced a new business and marketing partnership that will see a much closer alliance between the two companies.Powertrain Ltd - the engine and gearbox subsidiary of MG Rover Group - will supply all engines for the Caterham range. Caterham will also be granted exclusive access to the research and development groups which should breed some exciting products in the years to come.

On a commercial level Caterham will also be carrying X Power branding on their cars and the two companies will share marketing efforts at motorsport and motoring events. Caterham are also intending to simplify their product range with just four basic models - the Classic, the Roadshport, the SV and the Superlight. Engines will be available in 140bhp, 160bhp, 200bhp and 230bhp forms.

New for 2002 will be the Superlight R300 with 300bhp per tonne. R400 and R500 models will also be available with 200bhp and 230bhp extracted from the 1.8 litre K series. The alliance will no doubt serve both parties well with Caterham benefiting from the greater marketing clout of MG Rover, whilst MG will further polish its image as a sporty, exciting brand attracting a younger audience than in previous years. Sound sense from two all British companies.

MG ROVER AND CHINA BRILLIANCE CREATE GLOBAL AUTOMOTIVE ALLIANCE

MG Rover Group Limited (MG Rover) and China Brilliance Industrial Holdings (CBIH) have entered into a long-term strategic Alliance and co-operation agreement to finance, develop, manufacture and market world-class automobiles for the mutual benefit of both partners.

The alliance provides the potential for MG Rover derived cars to be manufactured in China, including those that will be jointly developed. This will include the new medium-sized car, for which the styling direction was previewed at the Geneva Motor Show. Plans have also been put into place for the joint development of a new small car and consideration will be given to the development of additional new models. Equally the opportunity also exists for MG Rover to manufacture and market CBIH derived vehicles.

The companies will co-operate on the supply and manufacture of engines and development of a new range of engines.

MG Rover will provide considerable technical support and assistance in order to establish the necessary manufacturing processes and systems in China. This will extend to the establishment of a joint Research and Development centre in China.

The alliance will seek significant cost benefit from larger manufacturing volumes, going forward. A joint component sourcing strategy committee will be established in order to maximise the economic benefit of the companies' combined purchasing.

The alliance will enable both partners to grow more quickly, than would otherwise be possible because they will benefit from each other's strengths. It has been structured in a way that MG Rover and CBIH both benefit financially from combined alliance sales.

Kevin Howe, MG Rover, Chief Executive said: "This is a wide-ranging global alliance that spans the full breadth of both company's activities, and presents many opportunities. I am delighted that we have so much in common. Brilliance has achieved quite outstanding results in a very short space of time and demonstrates world class standards in everything it does. It is clearly the leading automotive manufacturer, in the world's fastest growing car market.

"China will be one of the most important markets for the alliance. It is the world's fastest growing market for cars. The alliance can move quickly into a position where it can fully exploit this market's potential."

Dr. Brian X. Sun, Chief Executive, CBIH said: "From the beginning it was very clear Brilliance and MG Rover have a similar philosophy and operating style. We are both ambitious, clear in our vision and quick with decision-making.

"Equally important is the fact that MG Rover and CBIH do not have products that compete directly, which means we can take the full benefit from our alliance, without our plans conflicting in any way.

"Benefit will be derived from large economies of scale, which will spread development costs for new products over bigger volumes, and increase purchasing power for components, which will in turn make our products more competitive.
Together we will be a force to be respected in the automotive industry."

The alliance creates the potential for much greater global reach and scale. Market territories have been assigned to each partner. Vehicles can be manufactured and sold exclusively by CBIH in China, and the majority of Asia and Africa. MG Rover will have exclusivity in all other markets, however consideration will be given to combining efforts in the USA.

A new joint venture company will be created. Ownership of the company will be shared 50/50 between MG Rover and CBIH. Three directors from MG Rover and CBIH will form the board. They will oversee the collaboration and manage alliance objectives. There will be no exchange of equity between MG Rover and CBIH, however both parties will invest substantial resources into ensuring the success of the alliance.

Discussions between MG Rover and CBIH began in the second half of 2001. In December a statement was issued outlining the scope of the proposed Alliance. Today, both MG Rover and China Brilliance are very pleased to announce that agreement has been reached.

ROVER 'TCV' STARS ON MG ROVER'S GENEVA STAND

Giving the first public indication of Rover's future product design thinking, the Rover TCV (Tourer Concept Vehicle) forms the centrepiece of the company's stand at the 2002 Geneva Show.

TCV is shown as an external full size model, combined with a dynamic virtual-reality demonstration of the ingenious interior package capabilities. It has been created to show the company's styling and design vision for its new vehicles. Although this concept is innovative and free-thinking, it has been designed for genuine production feasibility.

Recent developments in world car markets reflect a growth in new categories of car, such as MPVs, van-based estate cars and various 'cross-over' hybrid vehicles. Now, the Rover TCV demonstrates a new way of combining luxury, style and driving enjoyment with exceptional practicality and adaptability.

As a starting point, the TCV fulfils the normal Tourer role - a stylish modern 'lifestyle' estate car with a roomy five-passenger cabin. Key features include:

  • A highly adaptable seating plan. The rear three seat squabs all fold individually to lie flush with the normal rear load floor, and the front passenger seat squab also folds to this plane.

This allows several combinations of passengers and loads, and any folded seats can also be used in 'table-top' mode for business or leisure purposes. Very long items of up to 3.1 metres can be accommodated. The centre rear seat squab can be replaced with various 'slot-in' modules, including a child seat, an entertainment centre, a fridge/food warmer and a business desktop unit.

  • An ingenious dual configuration for the rear loadspace area. In addition to a special hatch door hinged well forward to give excellent access to the loadspace, the lower bumper section also hinges open, revealing a large secure box-shaped underfloor stowage compartment for a host of associated items. Current and future developments in puncture management (Instant Mobility Systems and run-flat tyres) will render spare wheels finally redundant.

For even greater versatility, the main load floor is designed so that it can be removed from the normal position and stowed on the floor of the lower compartment, thus creating an exceptionally deep cargo space with full-depth access from the rear. One package objective was to be able to stow a normal front-loading washing machine in the upright position. Rover's rationale for this was not to create a dedicated washing machine 'delivery van', but to provide a universally recognisable demonstration of the remarkable capability of the package.

To help with the insertion and removal of such bulky and heavy loads the lower drop-down bumper has been engineered to form a flush loading platform when open. Having such a 'basement-level' load floor reduces loading effort and gives the lowest possible centre of gravity for the installed load, to minimise its effect on vehicle handling.

  • TCV has also been designed with extra ground clearance, appropriate wheels and tyres, robust finishes for the lower body and wheel arches, and can accommodate advanced traction control technology. Adding further to the outdoor lifestyle benefits of TCV, are the special longitudinal 'Alpine Light' windows set into the roof panel.

Summing up the TCV project, Rob Oldaker, MG Rover Product Development Director, said: "This concept car gives a strong indication of the way that our Design
team, headed by Peter Stevens, is developing a bold new personality for Rover. The TCV shows the kind of all-round versatility and luxury that we believe a Rover should offer."

The TCV is an integral element of the programme, which will spawn a new generation of MG and Rover products, the first of which will go on sale in 2004.

EXTENSION OF ROVER 75 RANGE

Rover has unveiled today (5 March), at the Geneva Motor Show, a new long-wheelbase model - developed from the successful British-built Rover 75 Saloon, in conjunction with established vehicle specialist coachbuilders S. MacNeillie & Son Ltd. The Vanden Plas is a supremely stylish limousine-style vehicle, which delivers the ultimate in comfort for an incredibly competitive price.

The Vanden Plas has a 200mm wheelbase extension over the acclaimed Rover 75 Saloon and utilises the considerable strength inherent in the production-saloon body's torsional-rigidity of 24,000Nm per degree. Available exclusively in high-specification Connoisseur trim, the longer-wheelbase Rover provides increased rear compartment legroom, extra interior lighting and provision for entertainment and IT systems.

Metallic paint is a standard feature and there is the opportunity to further extend, beyond its standard leather upholstery, the choice of interior trim or accessory items, for a fully individual product specification. Whatever specification is selected refinement and good ride quality come as standard in this executive car.

The Vanden Plas is powered by a quad-cam 24-valve, 2.5-litre light-aluminium V6 engine producing 177Ps (130kW) at 6500rpm. The 240Nm of torque produced at 4000rpm, matches the 5-speed JATCO automatic gearbox, which combines to produce smooth acceleration and good operating economy.

The Vanden Plas Connoisseur Auto model, only available in right-hand-drive form at launch, is priced in the UK at £27,995.

Market response to the product reveal in Geneva will provide valuable feedback for the potential extent of left-hand-drive business and market opportunities. Customers can make enquiries through the MG Rover dealer network or by contacting MacNeillies direct, on +44(0)1922 725560.

Martin Clive, Specialist Vehicle Sales Manager, for S. MacNeillie & Son Ltd said: "We've been working very closely with MG Rover to develop the Vanden Plas, to draw on all the Rover 75's product strengths, without compromising the elegant exterior lines. I'm absolutely sure the Vanden Plas will draw great interest from key business and celebrity groups, and we are happy to tailor the Rover to their specific desires. Furthermore the Vanden Plas offers the opportunity to incorporate occupant protection for those VIP clients who may require it."

Commenting from the Geneva Motor Show, John Sanders, MG Rover's Group Marketing Director, said: "The Vanden Plas is an elegant extension to the Rover 75 range and is one of a number of initiatives that will extend the Rover product portfolio into new levels of individual customer choice and satisfaction."

TYPES OF PAINT FINISHES

Monogram Chromactive

Chromactive paints are the most powerful colours in the 20 colours offered within the choice of Monogram colours. They are neither metallic nor pearlescent, yet they give a dramatic colour shift even in low light and have high levels of opacity and durability.

The paint formulation uses unique multi-layered ChromaFlair® pigment flakes which exhibit a wide range of hues depending on the viewing angle and the angle of light incidence.  Five ultra-thin layers of material are applied to a carrier film, and it is the precise control of these colourless layers that produces the effect of changing colours through the physics of light interference.  The composition of these layers produces colour effects similar to those found in nature, such as soap bubbles, butterfly wings and peacock feathers.
