accolade for training young people. MG ROVER GROUP TAKE ORDERS FOR £1 MILLION AT THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW On the opening day of the British International Motor Show, MG Rover Group has taken orders for new cars to the value of £1 million at showroom prices. The cars are mainly destined for the retail market, but include a fleet order where the business has been conquested from a close rival. The Company is actively selling vehicles from its stand and a number of "motor show special offers" have been made available. For those customers not able to visit the National Exhibition Centre, the MG Rover dealer network is able to offer similar terms over the motor show period. Without question, the newly announced MG XPOWER SV has created a huge amount of interest with its stunning good looks and supercar performance. The car is displayed on the MG Rover Group stand along with the current range of MG and Rover products plus a concept car which gives a firm indication of the Rover design direction. ENHANCED ROVER 25 AND 45 MODELS The 2003 Model Year Rover 25 and 45 ranges have many new features for enhanced convenience, security and style, which strengthen their ‘family links’ with the award-winning Rover 75. In the UK the latest Rover 25 and 45 ranges share the market debut of the new Trafficmaster Traffic Alert system, fitted to both ranges. Investment in these improved small and medium Rovers has been focussed on delivering genuine improvements and benefits. New technology and convenience features As standard equipment on all UK market 25 and 45 models, a new traffic
congestion-warning device is built into a new digital fascia clock. This uses
signals from the Trafficmaster network to provide live traffic information,
warning of congestion on motorways and trunk roads in three zones – three
motorway junctions or up to Further driver-assistance technology is introduced in the form of rear parking distance sensors, standard on all Rover 45s, optional on the 25 range, while a Becker Satellite Navigation unit is now available as an option across both ranges. This Becker ‘1DIN’ navigation unit incorporates a high spec CD tuner, and can play CDs whilst navigating the driver to his/her destination. With the UK and European markets contained on a single CD, the unit can store the last 50 destinations within its memory for ease of retrieval. In recognition of modern requirements, the cigar lighter has been replaced by a power socket, for mobile phones or other power accessories as a standard fitting on all models. The cigar lighter can be substituted as an identified no cost option. To cater for all these new factory-fit features, upgraded wiring harnesses have been developed. New interior ‘see and touch’ features Much of the 2003 improvement programme centres on the 25 and 45 cabin ambience, picking up some cues from the much-admired Rover 75 interior. For example there are new instrument graphics on ‘parchment’ coloured dials similar to those of the 75, new graphics for the heating and ventilating controls, new steering wheel and gear knob designs and a new straight-grain Rosewood effect for fascia and door garnish inserts. New, modern-style ICE equipment from the Blaupunkt range is now specified across the 25 and 45 ranges. A new range of seat fabrics and interior colourways give a significant lift to the interiors, especially on the 45, which now has a duo-tone fascia. The two new interior trim colourways are ‘Puma’ - a dark blue/grey, and ‘Smokestone’, a light grey. ‘Geo’, ‘Alpha’ and ‘Mode’ fabrics are used in attractive new seat panel combinations according to model, with leather retained for the top trim levels. On Rover 45, the front seats have been completely re-designed to give improved location and support, with further developments to maximise interior occupant space. Convenient stowage A number of new features have been added. Available in the stowage pack: a neat folding stowage box tailored to suit the floor area, stores flat when not required. It assembles in seconds with Velcro fixings. A button-type hook (‘curry’ or other shopping bag hook) in the boot on both sides is provided in Rover 25 and 45. Cup holders and pen clips are added to both ranges, with front door bin fittings, on all 25 models that also incorporate stowage slots for CDs. A detachable twin cup holder insert for the centre console oddments box is fitted on all 45 models. Sharper steering for Rover 45 Following mass acclaim of the chassis tuning that went into the MG ZS, engineers have applied a judicious touch of honing to the new Rover 45 chassis set up. The steering rack ratio has been raised and the suspension lowered by 10 mm. The front suspension lower arms now have firmer bushing, and the rear suspension geometry has been slightly re-tuned. Spring, damper and anti-roll bar specifications have all been modified according to model, with the result that the latest Rover 45 models have more responsive handling while retaining the expected degree of Rover refinement and ride comfort. Security improvements Vehicle security is a continuous battle against ingenious and fast-learning thieves. The latest Rover 25 and 45 models will have extra security measures including improved shielding of security-associated electronic items, ignition locks, rear door locks and boot/tailgate locks. The sill locking buttons have been shortened and alarm sounders now have separate battery back-up. Special new anti-tamper arrangements have been made for the VIN plate and the Rover 25 fuel cap locking is upgraded. The enhancements and the option of volumetric sensors to both models result in a Thatcham Category 1 security rating. Alloys & paint External changes for the 2003 model year include two new alloy wheel styles – a 15" ‘Serpent’ six-spoke style wheel replaces the former ‘Coronet’ design and a new attractive 15" Turbine 12-spoke alloy wheel. Two new paint colours are also introduced, with Royal Blue replacing Tahiti and Starlight Silver replacing Platinum. DEBUT OF NEW TRAFFICMASTER TRAFFIC ALERT FOR LATEST ROVER 25 AND 45 MODELS A significant new standard feature for all UK market 2003 Model Year Rover 25 and 45 models is the Trafficmaster Traffic Alert. This new device is built into a digital clock display in the fascia alerting the driver to potential congestion on key roads in their vicinity allowing time for re-route considerations and covers over 8,000 miles of motorway and trunk roads in Britain. Initial working mode Traffic Alert displays the time whenever the ignition is switched on. When the car comes within range of its first Trafficmaster transmitter, of which there are over 7,500 within the UK network, it will also display a triple segment ‘roadway’ icon. If all major routes in the area are flowing at above 30 mph, (or 20 mph within the M25) the three segments of the icon will appear empty. If the Traffic Alert unit receives information that traffic flow has fallen below the relevant speed in one given direction on the surrounding major roads, it can give a single audible ‘beep’ (the driver can suppress this whenever required) and display details of the distance, direction and road number of the congestion point. Distance is indicated by which of the three roadway segments is illuminated: the bottom segment for around five miles or one motorway junction (which ever is the greater) away, middle segment for 10 miles or two junctions and the top segment for 15 miles/ 3 junctions. The direction of the congestion point relative to the car is indicated as N, S, E or W, except on a circular motorway such as the M25, where it is described as clockwise or anti-clockwise. Should there be two congestion points signalled for the area, the display will cycle between the two warning displays every three seconds. After 30 seconds the display will always clear, leaving the relevant segment(s) illuminated as a reminder. If three or more congestion signals are received, a warning triangle and all three segments illuminate. Continuing operation Once the car has come into the range of a second Trafficmaster transmitter, the Traffic Alert will determine the direction of travel and then ignore congestion signals for roads behind the car or in the opposite direction. It then continues to warn of congestion within a five-mile radius on adjoining roads and for 20 miles or two motorway junctions ahead, whichever is the greater. Inside the M25, these ranges are reduced to three miles and seven miles respectively. The display information is updated every time a new message is received from a different transmitter. If no new message is received within seven minutes, the internal memory of the Traffic Alert is cleared, and it reverts to the initial working mode as above, to begin another cycle. Further congestion detail Where it is safe to do so, either by stopping (or asking a passenger) to use a mobile telephone, the Clock Alert user can obtain more detailed traffic information, such as estimated delay time, by dialling 1740.
LEADING FASHION DESIGNER’S MONOGRAM Matthew Williamson, Britain’s leading fashion designer has used MG Rover Group’s Monogram programme to construct a Rover 25 with his individual interpretation. Painted in Monogram Chatsworth Supertallic, an elegant bronze with high reflective properties, the Rover car also features other individualistic characteristics. The interior features ‘Classic’ Monogram seats with full Alpaca leather upholstery, unique 'Matthew Williamson' twin needle stitching around the outer edges of the seat cushion, squab and headrest, and along feature lines of the seat facings. Alpaca leather is also used for the gearlever gaiter with stitching to match the seats. 15" Serpent alloy wheels, an option on the Rover 25 range and featured on the 2002 Geneva show-stopping ‘Matthew Williamson Art Car’ have been chosen to complement the elegant combination of colour and trim. Initially the Rover 75 Saloon and Tourer, the MG ZT and ZT-T and the MG TF sports car will be available to Mexican car buyers with potential to extend the range at a later date. As a result of the free trade agreement that exists between Mexico and the European Community, European built cars are becoming more popular with Mexico’s more affluent middle classes. Total new car sales in Mexico are rapidly moving towards one million per annum. Armando Martinez, general manager of MG Rover’s importer in Mexico said: "The MG Rover range is ideal for the Mexican market where our target customers appreciate the distinctive nature of British cars. Backed by a US$15,000,000 investment, we have already recruited six dealerships and feel confident of achieving our target of over 20 nationwide by next year. The appeal and quality of MG and Rover cars coupled with an excellent after sales service will make us a major new player in the luxury and sporting sectors of the Mexican market." Jim Lynch, MG Rover’s director of international sales commented: "It is an important part of our marketing strategy to expand sales into more international markets and to exploit the unique appeal of our great range of cars. The early feedback from Mexico gives me confidence that Rover and MG will prove to be very popular with Mexican car buyers." He also stated: "MG Rover Group will be fully backing MG Rover Mexico, so Mexican customers will be treated to the highest standards." NEW ZEALAND RETURN FOR MG AND ROVER The MG and Rover car product brands are set to make an exciting return to the New Zealand market with the announcement today that a new importer trading under licence of MG Rover Group Limited – MG Rover New Zealand – will be headed up by general manager Andrew Bayliss. As the official New Zealand distributor for these two prestige and performance brands, Bayliss has been appointed to take over from current importer BMW Group New Zealand and launch vehicles into the New Zealand market during the third-quarter of 2002. "We are thrilled to have won the MG and Rover franchise," says Bayliss. "The brands' re-launch into New Zealand comes at a time when the two marques are enjoying high levels of interest in overseas markets, and the company is in a phase of launching significant new products over the next few years." "MG Rover dealers will be offering the highest specification of each MG and Rover model," explains Bayliss. "MG represents the affordable sports performance brand, while Rover offers a combination of British style, value and class-leading refinement." MG Rover's local line-up will include a number of models that have not previously been offered in New Zealand, including a luxury estate car - the Rover 75 Tourer Connoisseur (the Rover 75 Saloon won the New Zealand Car Of The Year Award in 1999). The MG range will encompass a number of performance variants including a 160Ps "pocket-rocket hot hatch" – the MG ZR 160; a V6-powered mid-size MG ZS, which has recently won races in the British Touring Car Championship; and the flagship high performance MG ZT saloon and MG ZT-T estate. Bayliss says there are some impressive new models in the pipeline including two new MG ZTs each powered by V8 engines. The Rover TCV, recently shown in concept form at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, gave a good indication of the future design direction for Rover. A full model line-up and price listing will be released closer to the September launch timing. Richard Spencer, regional manager, Asia/Pacific, MG Rover Group commented: "We are delighted to be planning our return to retail sales in New Zealand after a period of absence. ROVER INTRODUCE A NEW TAX BEATING - TURBO-CHARGED 1.8-LITRE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL 75 Rover is today (18 July) launching a new tax-beating turbo-charged Rover 75 to compete with the growing demand for compact-executive cars that combine tax-efficient CO2 ratings and the associated good fuel economy, with excellent performance and driveability. A new design of turbo-charger has been matched to the strong design characteristics of the K Series engine to produce the outstanding combination of 150Ps power, 215Nm of torque from 2100rpm and competitively low 193g/km CO2 emissions – ideal for the intellectual tax conscious motorist. The new 1.8T models are available on Rover 75 Saloon and Tourer body styles with a range of trim specifications available from Classic to Connoisseur SE. This addition to the engine range complements the 1.8, 2.0 V6, 2.5 V6 and the accomplished 2.0-litre common rail turbo-diesel – each offering class-leading refinement. The Rover 75 1.8-litre turbo-charged 4-cylinder engine holds many advantages over the competition. Weighing in at just 100kg, the K Series’ lightweight construction provides exceptional levels of responsiveness and drive. Available in showrooms from early August, the new 1.8T Saloon models will be priced from £18,295 for the Classic specification to the Connoisseur SE at £22,120. Rover 75 1.8T – Power Unit in Detail Rover engineers have tapped into previously
hidden development potential to produce a new 150Ps turbo-charged version of the
K Series 1.8-litre engine which The new 1.8T versions have a tax-beating CO2 rating of 193g/km, thus reducing the 2002/03 UK company car tax liability to 20% of list price plus lower running costs through enhanced fuel economy. At the same time, the 1.8T performs well with
good acceleration. 60mph passes from a standstill in 9.1 seconds and in gear
performance in fourth gear between Background and Programme For the ultimate in thermodynamic efficiency with low emissions, it was decided to apply the latest turbo-charging technology to the 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder K Series engine, which offered an excellent starting point of high efficiency and very low weight. Packaging and pre-prototype engineering of the turbo-charger, intercooler and ducting installation was carried out swiftly and accurately via MG Rover Group’s advanced Electronic Product Definition (EPD) facility. The Rover 75 was one of the very first cars in the world to have been entirely designed on this type of dynamic real-time system, as there was already a fully digitalised ‘model’ of the Rover 75 from which to begin work. The powerful ‘Virtual Engineering’ technology
makes it possible to carry out analysis of the vehicle assembly process (via
‘E-build’) and dealer servicing operations months before a physical prototype
exists. This reduces the traditional time-consuming development of the first
prototypes, which were therefore close to optimum before physical testing began.
Adding speed and efficiency to the programme were the company’s rapid
prototyping facilities, such as laser-cured resin Once prototypes were built, MG Rover engineers had the pick of the world’s automotive testing facilities to assess the performance and reliability of the new Rover 75 1.8T. Hot climate work was carried out in Australia and USA, with the opposite extremes being covered in Canada. Specific engineering tests were completed using carefully selected chambers and test tracks in several more countries. Under the Bonnet of the Rover 75 1.8T For many years, turbo-charged petrol engines have tended to be compromised by the fact that turbo-charger design has inevitably been skewed in favour of the far more common diesel applications. Turbo-chargers designed mainly for the narrower and lower speed bands of diesels were difficult to optimise for petrol engine use, giving less satisfactory results either at low speed or at high speed, according to the size of turbo-charger chosen. The Rover 75 1.8T, however, takes advantage of Garrett’s latest technology, using their new T100 turbine wheel design in a GT20 turbo-charger. Specifically designed to suit modern petrol engine characteristics, the T100 design contributes to the excellent driveability of the 1.8T under all speed and load conditions. Associated with the turbo-charger installation are a number of important engineering changes. A special exhaust manifold in cast stainless steel can reliably withstand temperatures in the region of 1000 ˚C. Uprated pistons and connecting rods are fitted, with the piston configured to give a 9.2:1 compression ratio. An uprated oil pump provides a 12% higher oil flow rate to meet the turbine bearing lubrication requirements, while the modified main bearing ladder casting has an inlet for oil return from the turbo-charger. The throttle body is of course sealed to retain turbo-charger boost pressure, with a suitably revised manifold pressure sensor, and the fuel system modified, with a returnless feed controlled by a pressure demand regulator, plus new fuel injectors with higher maximum flow rates. Modifications to meet the extra cooling airflow demands of the engine and intercooler include a revised undertray for the engine compartment. The philosophy behind the 1.8T was to use moderate boost pressure, so that the compression ratio could be kept fairly high, (at 9.2:1, compared with 10.5:1 on the normal 1.8 engine), for maximum efficiency at lower engine speeds when running off-boost. Emphasis has also been placed on providing strong and even torque throughout the normal driving range - the curve is virtually flat between 2100rpm and 4000rpm with 215Nm(159lbs ft) developed throughout. Such torque allows the 1.8T to easily pull
higher gearing, using the 3.9:1 final drive of the 2.5-litre models in place of
the 4.4:1 unit used for the regular 1.8- and 2.0-litre versions. As a result,
the 1.8T has vigorous in-gear acceleration, achieving Through the gears, the 1.8T leads the competition with a 0-60mph dash achieved in 9.1 seconds. Despite the brisk performance, the efficiency and high gearing of the 1.8T allows enhanced economy, with an official Combined figure of 35.3mpg and Extra Urban of 46.3mpg again leading the class. On the road, the 1.8T engine refinement and response characteristics harmonise well with the Rover 75 chassis, making the car well balanced and enjoyable to drive at any speed. Model Availability and Specifications The new 1.8T power unit is available from launch with a 5-speed manual transmission in both Saloon and Tourer body styles. A 5-speed automatic transmission will be made available with the 1.8T engine later in 2002. PHOENIX VENTURE HOLDINGS FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE SEES LOSSES HALVED FOR SECOND SUCCESSIVE YEAR In the year to 31 December 2001 Phoenix Venture Holdings Group, which includes MG Rover, Powertrain, XPart, MG Sport and Racing and MG Rover Property made a loss before goodwill and tax of £(187) million. This represents a further halving of the annualised loss for 2000 (circa. £(380) million), which in itself was half of the level of operating losses incurred in 1999 (circa. £(780) million) – the last full year of BMW control.
The year-end saw the Group with a net cash balance of £301m, which compares to £336m at 31 December 2000 (restated from £329m in the previous report to include Phoenix Venture Holdings cash balances at the end of 2000). Reflecting on a strong performance for the year, Group Chief Executive Kevin Howe said: "This period has been very busy for us all and we have certainly come a long way in a short space of time. During 2001 the emphasis of the business changed significantly. We are now past the planning stage and into the delivery phase. "We have launched, in an exceptionally short period of time, an extensive new range of models which have been extremely well received by the media and customers, we leave the year with a healthy cash balance, and our forward plans have received a large endorsement as evidenced by the funding obtained from three major UK financial institutions. "In the light of the 2001 sales outcome we have revised our 2002 outlook. This, together with the continued strength of Sterling, means that although we will not break-even this year, the projected result for 2002 will again see a step-change improvement from 2001. "I would like to thank all MG Rover employees for the realism that they have shown in the past two years and ask everyone, including the dealer body, to work together to fully realise the opportunities presented by our future plans. Together we share the prospect of a challenging but successful and rewarding future." The Group made good progress although more would have been achieved, if not for unavoidable and difficult trading circumstances. The continued strength of Sterling against the Euro required the decision to be taken, not to manufacture and sell certain vehicles that would have made a loss in European markets. As a consequence retail sales of 170,200 were lower than the business plan target of more than 180,000 units. However, since the overall volume shortfall comprised an over achievement against plan in the UK and an under achievement in European markets, the Sterling/Euro relationship meant that the overall profit impact was limited. Dealer network issues, unique to MG Rover also affected European market volume. Profit performance was also affected by the high prices charged for components sourced from companies, which were formerly part of Rover Group under BMW ownership. This factor has now been partially mitigated by the acquisition of Powertrain during 2001 and will be further improved when the ownership of the ‘L’ Series diesel engine is finally transferred to Powertrain following the relocation of the production facilities. Achievements in 2001 and outlook for 2002 Just over a year after taking ownership of MG Rover, the company launched the stunning new range of MG saloons together with the Tourer, both in Rover 75 and MG forms. The engineering excellence of these new products was recognised with Rob Oldaker, the MG Rover Product Development Director, receiving the coveted ‘Engineer of the Year’ award from the motoring magazine Autocar. Further accolades have been the ‘Outstanding Achievement’ Award by AutoTrade Magazine and the ‘Car of the Year’ Award for the Rover 75 by the Institute of Transport Management. Another significant achievement was the acquisition of Rover Financial Services. The major benefits for MG Rover are the ability to control the re-marketing of second hand cars, thereby optimising future residual values. It also provides access to a database of 58,000 customers, creating new marketing opportunities. The extensive improvements to the Longbridge site have been completed. They include the creation of a prestigious new visitor centre, which was opened by HRH the Princess Royal in January 2002 and a new quality centre. The refurbishment of International Headquarters, the Product Development Centre and the Sales and Marketing Centre were also completed. Later this year, production of the ZT Ultimate range of vehicles will start. Looking even further into the future, 2004 will see the launch of the new medium car, followed in 2005 by the new small car. The Group restructuring started early in 2001 has now been completed. The Group now comprises five major business areas under the holding company Phoenix Venture Holdings (formerly MG Rover Holdings). Each business area now has its own management board and this structure promotes increased focus on their differing business requirements. March 2002 saw transfer of overall responsibility for the worldwide parts distribution operation to Caterpillar Logistics. This business has an annual turnover in excess of £200m. More recently the group announced the formation of Xpart Limited, to explore new third party opportunities and develop the business. Success in motor sport came in various forms. Two cars were entered in the 2001 and 2002 Le Mans 24-hour race. Motor sport participation was extended to the British Touring Car Championship, and World Junior Rally Championship. The group, through its property business, now owns a small number of sites that are run as commercially viable MG Rover franchises. A further remit of the property division is the development of the Longbridge site. St Modwen Properties Plc will develop around 70 acres of surplus land to the joint benefit of the community and MG Rover. China Brilliance Industrial Holdings Alliance – an update In March 2002, the long-term strategic alliance was announced. Since then developments have moved on at a pace. Visits have been made to proposed manufacturing sites in China by both senior management and operational staff to help develop the manufacturing plans. During these visits constructive discussions also took place with senior governmental officials from the relevant provinces. A joint sourcing committee has been set up to work towards the optimisation of material costs for both current and future models. The joint engine strategy is advancing in terms of definition of range, applications and specifications. This is being dovetailed with the proposed model plans of the partners. China Brilliance Industrial Holdings marketing staff have visited MG Rover to share current expertise and develop future plans for the range of models and markets to be covered by the alliance. Product development work is continuing on the new medium and small cars, which are the key foundation stones of the strategic alliance. All of these actions are being supported by the development of a detailed legal and financial infrastructure necessary to ensure clear processes and controls are in place to manage such a wide-reaching alliance. The project is advancing on all fronts with great vigour. The first tranche of cash from the joint venture company, formed to fund the new models, has been deposited with MG Rover and we look forward to a productive period converting the opportunities into reality. ROVER 75 AWARDED ITM CAR OF THE YEAR
The Rover 75 has been awarded the ‘ITM Car of the Year’ accreditation, following an extensive research and selection process by the awards committee at the Institute of Transport Management. This award is one of many distinguished international awards won by the Rover 75 for product excellence. Under the operating title of the ITM Private Eyes Programme, canvassing took place of its members in the Fleet Transport sector. The programme was piloted at the 1998 Fleet Show and was designed to recognise advances within the fleet industry over the previous 12 months. The decision to present the Rover 75 with this coveted accreditation is the result of research, which included the polling of fleet managers and is a true reflection of the high esteem the vehicle enjoys within the industry. Those fleet managers interviewed stressed design standards, fuel economy, price, safety and legislation awareness as their premier concerns when assessing the vehicle offerings. The Rover 75 scored brilliantly in each area, in addition to special mentions being given to the stylish interior and exterior, and its fuel economy. The awards committee was convinced of Rover being the correct choice for this prestigious award. David Thomas, the Institute’s Technical Fleet Correspondent said: "It’s hard to sum up the appeal of the 75 in just a few words. But I would say that partly it lies in the way it manages to combine very individual styling that attracts young buyers, as well as older ones who can remember a time when the name Rover was synonymous with quality and technical innovation. "This Rover is a car for the new millennium, combining as it does a feeling of old-fashioned quality and attention to detail, with up-to-the-minute technology and wonderfully smooth engines." Announcing the Award, Patrick Sheedy, Media & PR Director of the ITM and Chairman of its Fleet Transport Committee, said: "The Rover 75 faced extremely strong competition from other vehicles in this class and we feel that this accreditation is one that will contribute to the final purchasing decision of many fleet managers. "The true experts are the fleet managers who do a day-to-day job that requires a level of knowledge that can only be gleaned from years of experience. We appreciate the contribution that our fleet manager members have made to the Private Eyes Programme and endorse their selection of the Rover 75 as ‘Car of the Year’."
